Kindergarten Experience (KG 1 to 3)

The Kindergarten Experience at MMLC offers a wide range of activities to support children’s physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Through carefully designed programs, we create an environment where children can explore, learn, and grow. Here’s an overview of the activities we provide:

Fine Motor Activities:

We offer various fine motor activities to enhance coordination and dexterity of children’s arms, hands, and fingers. These activities include block building, painting, colouring, manipulative play, and sensory exploration.

Gross Motor Skills:

Children develop their gross motor skills through both indoor and outdoor play. Our daily activities involve running, walking, jumping, throwing, dancing, spinning, climbing, and balancing, promoting overall physical development.

Music & Movement:

Children engage in daily music and movement activities that involve singing, dancing, and using musical instruments, scarves, parachutes, and other materials. These activities encourage creativity, expression, and engagement.

Free Choice Time:

During free choice time, children have the opportunity to explore and work on activities that interest them. They can engage in building with blocks, solving puzzles, creating art, reading books, engaging in dramatic play, and participating in manipulative, cognitive, and sensorial activities inspired by the Montessori method.

Lessons & Gatherings:

Children receive both individual and group lessons on various materials and concepts. Through these lessons, they develop vocabulary, independence, self-help skills, social-emotional skills, and confidence. These skills prepare them for their transition to our Children’s House classes.

Art & Sensory Activities:

Our teachers offer daily art and sensory activities that allow children to engage in individual and group experiences. These activities include water play, sand play, play-doh, shaving cream, painting, colouring, and drawing, fostering creativity and sensory exploration.

Large Motor Development:

We dedicate specific time each day to develop children’s large muscle groups. In favourable weather, children enjoy outdoor play on our playground, engaging in activities such as running, climbing, sliding, jumping, kicking, throwing, and digging. In inclement weather, we have a spacious indoor area where children can exercise their large muscles through running, climbing, building, riding tricycles, and playing with balls.

Kindergarten Communities:

At MMLC, we have two Children’s House classrooms. Each classroom is led by a Montessori Guide and supported by assistants. In these multi-age environments, children aged three to six learn together, benefiting from peer interactions. Younger children observe and learn from older ones, while older children reinforce their knowledge by sharing it with younger peers. They develop social skills, respect for others’ work and space, and courtesy.

Montessori Environments:

Children work in the Children’s House, a specially prepared environment that meets their developmental needs. Child-sized furniture and materials are provided, and children actively participate in maintaining the environment by organizing materials and engaging in maintenance activities. This prepared environment fosters independent learning and exploration.

The Prepared Environment:

Children have the freedom to choose activities from the materials presented to them by the Montessori Guide. The materials cover five key learning areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, and Cultural Studies.

Language:

In the Language area, children develop skills to support reading and writing. They engage in activities that enhance oral and listening skills, as well as phonics and writing skills.

Practical Life:

Practical Life activities, a cornerstone of Montessori education, promote concentration, coordination, independence, and order. Children develop fine motor skills, learn to take care of themselves and their environment, and practice grace and courtesy.

Mathematics:

The Math area focuses on learning quantity, symbols, the decimal system, and mathematical operations. Concrete materials are used to help children transition from concrete to abstract thinking throughout the three-year cycle.

Sensorial:

The Sensorial area supports the refinement of children’s senses. They engage in activities that involve comparing and contrasting size, shape, colour, sound, smell, and taste using specially designed materials.

Cultural Studies:

Activities in the Cultural Studies area help children gain a better understanding of the world around them. They explore continent maps, learn about elements of the earth, and discover concepts such as living and non-living and sink and float.

At MMLC, we strive to provide a holistic kindergarten experience that nurtures children’s physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Through a carefully designed curriculum and prepared environment, children have the opportunity to explore, learn, and thrive in a supportive and engaging atmosphere.
